Creative Workshop 2

Creative Workshop 2

Date: 9th December 2020

Project Aims:

  •           Create a phrase based on mental contamination
  •           Teach phrase during workshop
  •           Experiment with the phrase through the 'what if?' method.

Research and Planning:

For this workshop I will prepare a phrase from the research gathered on mental contamination through the website (Types of OCDUK: 2021). I discovered that mental contamination is the feeling of internal uncleanliness triggered from people or situations. However, I was interested to involve elements of contamination which is the feeling of external dirtiness e.g., the ritual of hand washing or/ and body washing.

Creative ideas to involve within the phrase:

  •         Repetition of washing hands or brushing clothes/ skin
  •         Dynamic of release to sharp – using breath to accentuate this.
  •         Use of full body to indicate the internal feeling of dirtiness.

Evidence and Reflecting:

Within this workshop I taught the phrase I created on my interpretation of mental contamination and contamination. Before I taught the phrase, I educated the dancers on both mental contamination and contamination. They were surprised to know that people diagnosed with OCD experience the feeling of being unclean on the inside of their body.  I am creating names for all of my base phrases to allow for organisation within my choreographic process (see video one for mental contamination base phrase).

Video One - The Mental Contamination Base Phrase in unison:

At the moment, it is evident that this phrase needs to be developed further because the movement is quite superficial. At the end of workshop I was able to explore this phrase as a duet with Anya and Shay, aiming to extend the phrase spatially.

At the beginning of the duet, Anya begins the phrase whilst Shay walks and observes. Shay then joins in demonstrating cumulative canon until Anya breaks from the phrase to walk around Shay. She eventually joins back with to finish the phrase
(see video two)

Video Two - Experimenting with the mental contamination base phrase

Within this session I demonstrated a growth in my development as a choreographer by experimenting with cumulative canon and not being afraid to add simplistic moments of walking around the stage. This phrase was a product of using the stage 10 imagination variation of probing a 'what if?' experimentation from The Phenomenological Choreographic Process. For example, 'what if, Shay, you join in randomly at some point with the phrase by walking?'
