Creative Workshop 4

Date: 11th  March 2021

Workshop Part One

Workshop Aims:

Prepare a creative task influenced by pulling out language from email interview again with participant one for dancers to work on individually.

Recap all of base phrases – flicking switch, mental contamination and seed phrase

Planning and Research

From email interview with participant one, I pulled out another quote that influenced my choreography process.

Interview Question 3. How/ why did you first think you had OCD? Did you notice any changes in yourself or your behaviour?

Participant Response: ‘Touching things with one hand followed by the other.’

Creative Task

From this interview research, I planned a creative task for all four dancers to produce a phrase based on passing weight from one hand to the other. However, I will explain that the hands do not always have to be taking weight, they can just take the lead as long as the hand follows. I will also suggest that it does not always have to be hands taking the lead, it could be legs or shoulders for example. I will ask for the movement to be release based with elements of sharpness.

Evidence and Reflection

This workshop was successful because it produced three strong base phrases that can be further developed. Each phrase demonstrates a relation to weight giving/ body parts taking the lead. However, from observing the phrases, they could have been a few more moments of release, instead sharpness and attack was quite overpowering within the phrases.

Each dancer learned all four base phrases therefore all video evidence is performed by four dancers in unison.  I have only selected three videos to evidence this workshop because although Leah’s hand phrase was interesting, it was very linear and did not move through the space.

The phrases created within this workshop, will be referred to as the Hand Base Phrases. Within video one, Shay demonstrates mainly tapping hands on the body contrasting with Nicole’s hand phrase and Anya’s hand phrase that show touching on the floor, the body and through the space. Overall, the phrases are effective.

Workshop Part Two

Workshop aims:

  • Create a fourth phrase stimulated by the same idea of one hand following the other through a group improvisation task.

Planning:

I plan to experiment with a group improvisation task in which I begin improving thinking about one body part leading to the other, whilst the dancers copy my improvisation. I then pass the improvisation lead to each person until everyone has contributed to the creating of the phrase. We then will clarify the improvisation to create the fourth hand base phrase.

Evidence and Reflection:

This improvisation task worked very well. It was a quick way to produce movement, engaging everyone within an active group task.
